Cost-effective interconnect and circuit design methods for high-speed nanometer CMOS VLSI design. $69 The semiconductor industry has been following Moore's law over the past five decades because of the continuous CMOS process technology scaling. This scaling has led to reduced integrated circuit cost, higher integration density, lower energy per transition, and better design performance. On the other hand, many new design problems have been introduced due to scaling, and these problems become more significant when migrating from one technology node to a newer one with smaller feature size. Interconnect scaling is a major design problem in nanometer technologies. Interconnect scaling suffers from increased wire resistance and cross-coupling capacitance to adjacent wires in scaled technologies, both of which lead to significant delay degradation and delay uncertainty. Moreover, chip size has remained roughly constant and the number of components integrated on one chip that require global interconnections is increasing with scaling. These issues made on-chip interconnects, especially global interconnects, a major bottleneck for the performance of VLSI systems. The repeater insertion solution is becoming a problem itself due to the huge number of repeaters in nanometer technologies. Also, interconnects are major contributors to the overall system power, cost, and reliability. This dissertation presents four new design methods for global on-chip interconnects. The proposed methods show significant improvement over conventional design methods. Designing high-speed and low-power logic circuits with CMOS also faces many challenges because of nanometer technologies. This dissertation presents two new CMOS circuit styles. One style, called SP-Domino, is suitable for wide fan-in logic, and the other style, called Feedback-Switch Logic (FSL), is suitable for general high-speed and low-power circuits. New, more accurate interconnect models are required to manage the changing physical characteristics of integrated circuits. Currently, RC models are used to analyze high resistance nets while capacitive models are used for less resistive interconnect. However, on-chip inductance is becoming more important with integrated circuits operating at higher frequencies, since the inductive impedance is proportional to the frequency. The operating frequencies of integrated circuits have increased dramatically over the past decade and are expected to maintain the same rate of increase over the next decade, approaching 10 GHz by the year 2012. Also, wide wires are frequently encountered in important global nets, such as clock distribution networks and in upper metal layers, and performance requirements are pushing the introduction of new materials for low resistance interconnect, such as copper interconnect already used in many commercial CMOS technologies. On-Chip Inductance in High Speed Integrated Circuits deals with the design and analysis of integrated circuits with a specific focus on on-chip inductance effects. It has been described throughout this book that inductance can have a tangible effect on current high speed integrated circuits. For example, neglecting inductance and using an RC interconnect model in a production 0.25 mum CMOS technology can cause large errors (over 35%) in estimates of the propagation delay of on-chip interconnect. It has also been shown that including inductance in the repeater insertion design process as compared to using an RC model improves the overall repeater solution in terms of area, power, and delay with average savings of 40.8%, 15.6%, and 6.7%, respectively. Optimal signal, power, clock and thermal interconnect networks for high-performance two-dimensional and three-dimensional integrated circuits. $69 A high-performance 2D or 3D integrated circuit typically has (i) ratio of delay of a 1mm wire to delay of a nMOS transistor >500, (ii) target impedance of power delivery network <1mO, (iii) clock frequency >2GHz, and (iv) thermal resistance requirement of heat removal path < 0.6°C/W. This data illustrates the difficulty of obtaining high-quality signal, power, clock and thermal interconnect networks for gigascale 2D and 3D integrated circuits. Specific material, process, circuit, packaging, and architecture solutions to enhance these four types of interconnect networks are proposed and quantitatively evaluated. A microchannel-cooled 3D integrated circuit technology is developed to deal with thermal interconnect problems inherent to stacked dice. The benefits of carbon nanotube technology, improved repeater insertion techniques and parallel processing architectures for signal interconnect networks are evaluated. A circuit technique to periodically reverse current direction in power interconnect networks is proposed. It provides several orders of magnitude improvement in electromigration lifetimes. Methods to control power supply noise and reduce its impact on clock interconnect networks are investigated. Finally, a CAD tool to co-design signal, power, clock and thermal interconnect networks in high-performance 2D and 3D integrated circuits is developed. |
