Artists guitars: Heavy metal

For guitar players, a signature guitar of their idols can be the closest thing to getting thier heroes tone, or just another way to cheat you out of an extra £200 just because its a signature guitar. Heres a few of the signature guitars out there for the ‘metallers’.

Dean Guitars ‘Dimebag Darrell’ range. While most guitarists have one signature guitar -Pantera and Damageplan’s guitarist has had thirty three done in his honour. After his death in 2004 Dean decided not to let the guitarists name go into obsuricty and bought out a large range of Dimebag Darrell guitars. When the guitar was made will determine which pickups you get in it -either the ‘Dimebuckers’ in the newer models, or ‘EMG’s in the older ones. If your after a Dean just choose with pickups you like better and then go for which guitar looks good to you. If you love Pantera then there is no question- buy this guitar. And with prices from £219 upwards -one of those thirty three has to appeal to you.

Kerry King’s BC Rich series. Also having more than one signature guitar is Slayer Guitarist Kerry King. Available as either a flying V or Explorer shaped guitar as well, painted with tribal designs to match his head tattoos, these guitars look as mean as their owner, but how do they sound? Not bad, they certainly go along way to helping you achieve that harsh ‘Slayer’ guitar tone.Including BC Rich’s own B.D.S.M pickups- its nice to see some thought has gone into these models.

Jackon’s Phil Demell guitar. Made with input from Machine Head’s Phil Demell, this Jackson Signature is truly nothing short of brilliant. With a flying V shape and EMG pickups, this guitar is going to tear you a new one in your quest for the ultimate tone. Expensive at £1100m but if you’ve got your money and love your metal its the guitar to go for, and it comes tuned to drop B as well.
